India Adoption

Overview

The Children’s Bridge supports Canadian families pursuing adoption from India through India's regulated intercountry adoption process.

Families considering India should be prepared for a child-centred process that considers the needs of children awaiting permanent families and the eligibility and approval of prospective adoptive parents.

Children & Adoption in India

Children in need of intercountry adoption from India vary in age, background and needs. This may include older children, sibling groups, and children with identified medical, developmental, or other special needs.

Families should carefully consider the age and needs they feel prepared to support and should be committed to helping their child maintain meaningful connections to their Indian culture, heritage and identity.

How it Works

The process begins with determining eligibility and completing the required provincial adoption approvals. Families then prepare their documentation for submission to India and proceed through the country's matching and referral process.

Matching & Wait Times

Matching considers the needs of children awaiting adoption along with a family's eligibility, approval parameters and openness.

There is no guaranteed timeline for a child referral. Timelines vary depending on a family's circumstances and the characteristics of children requiring adoptive families.

Travel & Post-Adoption

Families should expect to travel to India as part of the adoption process and complete the required legal, immigration and placement steps.

After returning home, families are required to complete post-adoption reporting in accordance with Indian and provincial requirements.

Is India Right for Your Family?

Eligibility for the India program depends on several factors, including age, marital status, family composition, health, and other requirements established by Indian adoption authorities.
